Ho wever, the modern exponent of this thesis, Hayden White, proposed it in writing more that four decades ago, and exemplified it with four nineteenth-century historians: Michelet, von Ranke, Tocqueville and Burckhardt(White 1975).It is important to note that, in a similar way to what happened with history made by eyewitnesses, the refusal to consider a rhetoric of history is a relatively new phenomenon which begins with nineteenth-century positivism.
